My take on Norwegian-inspired double threshold training.

Below, I am sharing the training log of Lili Anna Vindics-Tóth. During the autumn season of 2024, I was responsible for writing her training while her training situation was being organized. During this period, she achieved her first senior national record in the Road Mile, finishing closely behind Gabija Galvydyte. Additionally, she placed fourth in a Gold Label Cross Country race in Spain.

Additional Notes:

  • Before this period there was a two-week rest period consisting of easy runs.

  • She had already been an Olympian before this period and set her personal best in the 5000 meters (15:38) earlier in the season. Therefore, I was not solely responsible for this results, but her previous coach also :).

  • During double training sessions:

    • The morning sub-threshold runs were always performed on a treadmill, at a faster pace than the pace chart, but with similar effort.

    • Occasionally, other threshold sessions were also slightly faster than the pace chart indicated.

  • Weekend long runs typically took place at an easy to moderate pace.

  • During weeks marked in red, she had intense military training, requiring a modified schedule with only one session per day (also the reason for the 3.5k time trial)

  • Since she competed in events up to 800-10,000 meters during the autumn, I tried to touch al these paces/efforts during harder anaerobic sessions (marked with red).

  • During most non-race weeks, the weekly mileage was around 130-155 km, plus about 40 minutes on the elliptical and 1-2 strength training sessions per week.

  • The weekly speed development consisted of 2x4x60m striders at a 1500-800 meter pace, with 2 and 4-minute recoveries between sets.

  • There were occasional 100 m strides here and there after workouts, and easy runs.
